+2.5ºC is based on satellite images of Antartica. Using elevation maps, I simulated and painted a possible, warmer future. Viewers who resist facing the ugly truth of the climate crisis are drawn in by a serene, abstract aesthetic. On closer inspection, however, a dystopia suggests itself: melting ice sheets, climatic feedback loops, and the thousand natural and social consequences that follow. With these paintings, I aim to maintain, rather than resolve, the tension between a vision of a dangerous future and a sense of beauty that might help us sustain life on a fragile planet.
